It's called a puppy rail and it keeps our little babies safe.
Installing a puppy rail is the human equivalent of providing your tiny newborn with a safe sleep space to prevent the risk of SIDS. I "slept" beside the whelping box for the first few weeks to help our first time mother with overnight feedings, and let me tell you installing these should be the standard.
When Luna nurses, she needs back support just like a human mother. She will push back until she finds that support, and installing this rail means that if she were to pin a puppy behind her accidentally, it would have a chance to let us know it needs help with a tiny puppy cry that sends me running, and makes Mama Luna jump.
